Ottawa's Royal Swans Housing Facility - Photos

Ottawa's Royal Swans

These photographs show the swans locked up in their dismal housing conditions at the Leitrim Road facility. Cramped outdoor enclosures that are overgrown with shoulder high weeds and even smaller dirty pools would not meet humane standards for even short-term care, let alone be acceptable for continuous captivity (the Royal Swans have a wingspan of 7.5 to 8 feet). Their wings are elevated, a sign of stress, and feathers are scattered everywhere.
